"Taking it All " Four Forty-nine. No messages. Heero closed his cell phone and shoved it into its holder. He didn't really believe that Trowa would call him tonight. . .but part of him wanted to hear the Latin's voice. He wanted to tell him not to worry about what happened earlier. The last thing he wanted was to make Trowa worry about something like this. It was this reason that made him want to call the Latin, but calling him this early would seem odd to Quatre, putting Trowa in an awkward position. Instead, he forced himself to be patient. After all, Trowa promised he would call before boarding the shuttle to Earth. Heero scoffed as he thought about Trowa's update. Yesterday, when Trowa arrived at his apartment, he had told the Japanese man that Quatre managed to shift his schedule more. This changed the date of their departure for vacation to today, rather than the weekend. The first thing that had gone through Heero's mind from hearing this was: why couldn't Quatre do that when Trowa was sick'? The announcement only increased Heero's theory that Quatre was close to breaking. No doubt, the Arab wanted Trowa away from Heero as soon, and as much, as possible. That only meant that Quatre was nervous about losing Trowa. The thought brought a smile to Heero's lips. If Quatre was worried, then it could only mean that things between them were getting more and more sketchy; increasing Heero's chances. Heero sat back in his seat and glanced over to his pocky. The strawberry flavored treats were gone. That was the problem with strawberry; it seemed to go a lot faster than the others. Closing his eyes, he relaxed for the remaining ten minutes of his break. The grave yard shift was always boring, and on occasions, Heero used the time to catch up on his reading or training. He hated working this shift, but it allowed him more time to see Trowa. That's what made it worth wild. "I never expected you to sleep on company time." Heero's eyes flashed open, and he sat straight to find Duo standing in the doorway. The American wasn't dressed for work, and coming in extremely early, wasn't a possibility. That left only one explanation. . . "Wu Fei kicked you out again?" Duo's grin wavered a brief moment. "What did you do this time?" "I didn't do anything." "Sure you didn't." "Really. I honestly didn't, and that's why he kicked me out." Heero's eye brow furrowed as Duo entered the room and plopped into the chair across from him. "I just think it's stupid that I work six days a week, and he wanted me to spend my only day off, cleaning the gutters." "Didn't you say you would clean the gutters before you left for vacation?" "Yeah, but then we went on vacation." "So you spent the last two weeks, not working." "Hey! Don't think I don't know where this is leading to. I've already gone through this with Wu Fei, and if you start, I'm leaving." "Promise?" "Bastard." Duo slumped in his chair and Heero returned to his relaxed position. "So, can I stay at your place until he cools off?" "Sure." Heero muttered, figuring that Trowa wasn't going to be within light years, there was no harm in allowing Duo to stay. "Can I ask you something?" "No." Duo pouted as he stared at Heero's features. "You always say that." "Then stop asking me if you can, you know as well as I do that you will anyways." Duo stuck his tongue out at his friend. "And don't think I don't know you're doing that." "So, umm. . .just out of curiosity, does cat woman have a midnight shift, like you." "What kind of question is that?" "Well, I was just wondering, since you work six nights a week. . .and you sleep most of the day away. . .how do you find time to see her?" "I thought we agreed not to talk about this?" "Well, we're the only ones here. . .besides, I thought you meant that I couldn't talk to anyone else about this." "I don't want to talk about it Duo." "Please Heero? Not only am I going crazy with questions, but I'll explode if I don't talk to someone about it." "Explode, and I'll kill you." "Heero!" "Find another topic, or go away." "Fine, be that way. . .you probably already know that Quat and Tro's shuttle is leaving in about three hours." Heero nodded without opening his eyes. "Do you know what part of Earth they're going?" "Didn't he tell you?" "He did, but I was either half listening, or forgot." "Paris." "The city for lovers. It's perfect for them." Heero didn't respond. "I wouldn't be surprised if Quatre decides to just elope and marry there." This caught Heero's attention. His eyes snapped open, and he slid to sit straight. "What?!" Duo blinked a couple of times in confusion. "Yesterday, while you and Tro were at the game, we went shopping. . .guess what we were shopping for?" "Please tell me drapes." Duo laughed loudly, and his grin widen. "No. Wedding bands. He's going to propose to Trowa in Paris." Heero felt sick to his stomach. The little bastard's going to propose? Damnit. Heero's thoughts raced with possibilities of Trowa's reaction to the question. They were together for three years, and now, he decides he wants to propose. Why did that worry Heero? "Hey, you look a little steamed there buddy." Heero pushed aside his thoughts. "Are you okay?" "I'm fine Duo." "I know you're not exactly Quatre's number one fan, but even you have to admit that he and Trowa are meant for each other." "Why do you say that?" "Come on Heero, what are you, blind? They've been at it for three years now. I mean, the number one magazine in this Colony deemed them the best couple since Romeo and Juliet." "So you're basing your ideal on a magazine article." "Well, no. If you ever spent time with them when they're together, you'd see why. They never fight. . ." Lie number one. Heero told him silently. "They never argue. . ." Lie number two. "According to Quatre, their sex life is great." Heero turned his scoff into a cough. "They tell each other everything. . ." Lie number four. "And everyone says that they look great as a couple. So why would anyone think they wouldn't get married one day?" "That's a crock of shit Duo. No couple goes without fighting or arguing. If they do, then one of them is repressing feelings, and I know from experience that repressing is never good. You only heard one side of the sex tale, and regarding their telling each other everything. . .well, we'll just say that I know a few skeletons in Trowa's closet that he never told Quatre; and I'm sure Quatre's got a few up his sleeve too." Duo thought about this a few minutes before responding. "Am I going to have to gag and bind you to your seat at their wedding?" Heero turned from Duo's question. "Heero, promise me that you won't say anything, when the priest asks for reasons to prevent the marriage? I mean, Trowa's happy with Quatre. If he wasn't, then he wouldn't have been with him for as long as he has. You can't interrupt that just because you hate Quatre." "I don't hate Quatre, I loath him. . .aside, you don't know a damn thing about Trowa, so how can you deem that he's happy or not?" "Hey, you're taking this a little too personal. I'm merely making general observations here." Duo was right. He didn't really have any real reason to start snapping as he had been doing. It wasn't Duo's fault that he knew nothing of Heero and Trowa's affairs. "I'm sorry. I probably just stepped out of line." "Can you promise me something? Promise you won't say anything to Trowa that's going to make him have a nervous breakdown and leave Quatre at the alter." "Believe me, if stone walled Trowa Barton gets freaked out over something I say, then it only means that he doesn't want it in the first place. I know that if he truly believes in something, he'll stand by it no matter what anyone says or does." Duo sighed and placed his hand under his chin. "Then I guess I better start looking into gundamium alloy chains." Heero's eyes lifted to his friend, wondering if he heard a single word that was just said. What if Trowa did accept Quatre's proposal on a whim? The thought of the Latin spending the rest of his life with Quatre angered Heero more than watching them kiss. There's no way he would stick around this Colony if that ever happened. Though Trowa was the best friend he ever had, his heart couldn't take seeing them as a happily married couple; especially after everything that has happened in the pass few months. At that moment, Heero felt his hip vibrating. He wasted no time in answering, knowing that it was Trowa. "Hey." "Are you busy?" "Actually, I'm on break." Duo listened intently at Heero's words. He couldn't help but notice that his friend's tone seemed softer than usual. Duo had eavesdropped on quiet a few of Heero's phone conversations, and he couldn't remember a single time that he used such a soothing voice to talk to anyone. "About tonight-" "Baby, don't worry about it. It was just me over reacting." "I feel shitty leaving you like that. I never wanted to hurt you." "Hey, I said it was okay. You're feeling shitty is enough punishment." "Is that cat woman?" Duo asked as he relocated to Heero's left. "Does she sound sexy? Can I hear?" Heero pushed to his feet to leave. "How long did you cry?" "Please don't dwell on it. . .if it makes you feel better, you can make it up to me later. You know, a couple of strip dances; a few blow jobs; and back rubs are always nice." He heard Trowa slightly laugh at his comment. "That's what I want to hear instead of guilt." Heero stopped half way down the hall and leaned against the wall. "You're being quite baby." "I guess just knowing you're on the other side calms me." "What are you thinking about?" "How much I want to be in your arms right now, kissing your lips." Heero closed his eyes and slid to a sitting position against the wall. "Do you ever think of him like this when we're together?" "No." "Then, baby, why are you still there?" "I don't know." ". . .tell me." "I can't." "Why?" "I don't know." He was crying. Heero could hear it in his voice. . .could feel it through the connection. He wasn't sure how, or why it was possible to sense Trowa like this, but as of recently he found that he could read his lover even more clearly now than ever before. "Baby, don't cry." "Who said I was crying?" "Did you forget who you're talking to? Look, if you want, I'll come and get you. You don't have to do this." Trowa clutched the phone and wiped his tears. He wasn't going to be able to explain to Quatre why he was crying. Once the Arab would see the redness of his eyes, it would trigger a chain of questions that Trowa didn't want to go through right now. "Baby, if you don't want to be there, you don't have to. Obligations have been thrown out the window long before now." Trowa was silent. "Baby, you know he's not ignorant to what we're doing. So what's keeping you back?" More tears spilled. Trowa bowed his head and allowed them to drop to his pant leg. Heero swallowed hard, trying to keep his own tears at bay. "I'm sorry. I'm not trying to pressure you." "Do you love me?" "Not until you decide." "I need to hear it Heero." "I refuse to allow your answer to be affected by mine. . .Please stop punishing me for wanting what's best for you." He couldn't hold them any longer as his own tears spilled. They sat in silence, listening to the other cry for a moment longer. "I should get back to work. My break's probably already over." They shared good bye's and Heero closed his cell phone. Inhaling deeply, he wiped his tears and took a moment to gather himself. He couldn't believe that he started crying again, and he wondered if he was starting to break down, bit by bit. "You okay?" Duo asked from the threshold of the break room. Heero didn't answer at first. He hated the fact that Duo just witnessed this. In truth, Trowa was the first person in decades that had witness him cry; and the last person he wanted to see the same was Duo. . .well, second before last. "I'm fine." Heero stated just as Duo kneeled before him. "What is this chick doing to you?" Duo questioned, shocked and not use to seeing his best friend with red eyes. "Do you want me to go talk to her?" "No." Chapter
